Rumour has is that Antwerp one of my favorite cities, is the fashion capital of Belgium. That’s why I’m very happy that I live near it. I frequently visit Nationaalstraat, a street full of nice shops and espressobars. It’s the place to be for students and fashionlovers, because MoMu is there. The one and only fashion museum of Antwerp. Every year they have really nice expositions.
The previous expo they organised was Inspirations from the Belgian designer Dries Van Noten. Dries Van Noten is a member of Antwerp Six, who graduated from Antwerp’s Royal Academy of Fine Arts between 1980-1981. Now he’s a succesfull haute-couture designer. It was the first time in Van Noten’s carreer that he offers an exhibition. That’s why I was very pleased when I attended the press conference and had the honour to meet Van Noten himself.
First there was a press conference where Van Noten explained why he had this exhibiton and what inspired him. When I was sitting in my chair, I couldn’t believe I was sitting right in front of Dries Van Noten, the designer I saw in every international fashion magazine. The most famous designer anno 2015. I admire him. Love (most of ) his collections. They’re inspired by the Middle East. He mixes so many fabrics and prints yet they are in perfect harmony. How does he do that?
After the conference there was a tour guided by Van Noten. The rooms were very dark and had there own vibe. It was interresting to see Van Noten talk passionatly about his inspirations. For some of his collections he was inpired by artists like: Serge Gainsbourg, Kurt Cobain and the Sex Pistols. The tour ended. Van Noten did some interviews with the press en after that I was finally able to speak to Van Noten. He was very kind, calm and down-to-earth. His personallity really matches his collections and I’m so happy I met Dries Van Noten! Now MoMu has an exposition called ‘Footprint’. They display shoes from ledgendary designers like Maison Margiela, Dirk Bikkembergs, Ann Demeulemeester, Dries Van Noten, AF Vandevorst, Manolo Blahnik, Christian Louboutin, Tokio Kumagaï, Roger Vivier, JW Anderson, Balenciaga, André Perugia, Vivienne Westwood, Salvatore Ferragamo, Patrick Cox, Raf Simons, Pierre Hardy en Azzedine Alaîa. And Geuss what? I’m going to meet one of those designers, next month!
